Shrubs are planted on a slope with the crown visible and set at a flat bench grade matching the nursery level. The planting pit requires a minimum width of twice the rootball diameter with sides and bottom broken up. Backfill consists of a fifty-fifty blend of imported topsoil and native soil over undisturbed or compacted native soil to eliminate settlement. A six-inch layer of specified import topsoil and specified mulch covers the slope, with drainage daylighted if necessary. For ball and burlap specimens, the top half of natural burlap is removed while synthetic burlap and wire cages are completely removed. Container plants require scarified matted roots and loosened surrounding soil.
