The bottom of the root ball rests on existing or recompacted soil with modified soil or topsoil of varying depth placed around it. Prior to mulching, soil is lightly tamped around the root ball in six-inch lifts to brace the tree without over-compacting. A round-topped soil berm measuring four inches high by eight inches wide is centered on the downhill side of the root ball for two hundred forty degrees, beginning at the root ball periphery. The original slope should pass through the point where the trunk base meets the substrate and soil.

WHEN THE PLANTING HOLE HAS BEEN BACKFILLED, POUR WATER AROUND THE ROOT BALL TO SETTLE THE SOIL. ORIGINAL SLOPE SHOULD PASS THROUGH THE POINT WHERE THE TRUNK BASE MEETS SUBSTRATE/SOIL. MODIFIED SOIL OR TOPSOIL. DEPTH VARIES. (SEE SOIL PREPARATION PLAN). ROUND-TOPPED SOIL BERM 4" HIGH X 8" WIDE ABOVE ROOT BALL SURFACE SHALL BE CENTERED ON THE DOWNHILL SIDE OF THE ROOT BALL FOR 240°. BERM SHALL BEGIN AT ROOT BALL PERIPHERY. ROOT BALL MODIFIED AS REQUIRED. TRUNK CALIPER SHALL MEET ANSI Z60 CURRENT EDITION FOR ROOT BALL SIZE.
