The tree is set in a dug pit with the root ball positioned two inches above the finished grade. The pit is backfilled with parent material snug around the root ball over undisturbed soil. A three-inch layer of hardwood mulch covers the backfill, and a three-inch earth saucer retains moisture around the base. Tree stakes and ties support the trunk, referenced to project specifications, maintaining a five-foot vertical dimension from the grade.
