A deciduous tree is set into an excavated pit with a native soil base measuring twice the diameter of the root ball. All wire and burlap are cut and removed from the root ball as close to the base as possible. The backfill mixture consists of seventy-five percent native soil combined with twenty-five percent topsoil, topped with a mixed topsoil layer and a three-inch layer of mulch pulled one foot away from the trunk. The tree base is maintained one to two inches higher than the existing grade to allow for settlement. Two two-inch diameter round fir posts are installed and secured to the tree using one-inch diameter cinch ties positioned at one-third the height of the tree, designed for removal after the first year.
