Two two-inch diameter round fir posts are installed plumb on each side of the tree to the same height above finish grade, connected to the trunk by thirteen gauge galvanized malleable wire cable looped through a one-inch grommeted nylon webbing. The rootball sits on undisturbed subsoil with the top of the rootball positioned one to two inches above finished grade, and the wire basket and burlap removed from the top one-third of the rootball. The excavation hole is dug to a diameter three times wider than the rootball and backfilled with planting soil mix over undisturbed subgrade. The root flare remains exposed, surrounded by a five-foot diameter depressed watering basin with mulch kept at least four inches away from the tree trunk. Trunks for fall plantings are wrapped to the lowest branch and removed the following spring.
