A twenty-four inch high-density polyethylene root barrier is installed with interlocking strips at junctions and root deflectors facing toward the tree, with the top half-inch positioned above grade. A three-inch gravel backfill of three-quarter-inch size extends two to three inches below the bottom of the root barrier. The adjacent planted area slopes at a minimum of two percent toward the barrier. The assembly terminates against an adjacent curb or paving over a compacted or natural base.
