A tree root ball is positioned on undisturbed subgrade within a pit that features angled sides and a sloped bottom. Burlap, twine, and wire are cut and removed from the top two-thirds of the root ball, with wire baskets completely removed. Amended planting mix is backfilled and tamped to remove air pockets, topped with bark mulch in grass areas. Two to three 2 inch by 2 inch hardwood stakes are driven a minimum of 18 inches firmly into the subgrade prior to backfilling. Arbor tie woven polypropylene guying material is attached from the stakes to the trunk above the first branches using nail ties for firm support. The top of the root ball is positioned 4 inches above the finished grade.
