The plant crown is set level with finished grade, centered in a pit excavated to twice the rootball diameter and one-and-a-half times its depth. Pit surfaces are roughened and root masses are cut to stimulate new growth. Topsoil backfill and fertilizer fill the excavated space around the rootball. A two-inch layer of mulch covers the planting bed, tapered toward the crown, and surrounded by a two-inch high earth saucer for water retention.
