The shrub is set with its crown positioned one-half to one inch above finish grade inside a prepared plant pit. The pit excavation measures two times the rootball diameter in width and one to one-and-a-half times the rootball depth. Plant tablets are placed within the backfill mix per project specifications. A temporary earth berm is constructed around the basin to retain water, and native soil surrounds the backfill zone. For slope planting, the uphill side of the plant pit is shaped for a smooth, continuous transition to finish grade at a maximum ratio of two-to-one.
