The planting pit is excavated to three times the width of the root ball, with the bottom and sides scarified prior to planting. The tree is set in planting soil type 3, surrounded by a layer of four-inch shredded hardwood mulch that is pulled away from the trunk to prevent contact. The surrounding area consists of turf lawn over undisturbed soil or compacted subgrade. Existing tree roots must be protected during excavation. The installation requires inspection and acceptance by the landscape architect before the mulch is placed.
