The tree is planted with its root flare positioned even with the finish grade plus one inch and the trunk held plumb. Two inches of mulch are applied around the tree while being held away from the tree flare. A temporary soil saucer is constructed for watering and removed prior to surface finishing. Planting soil surrounds the root ball above a subdrainage layer.
