The tree is positioned such that the top of the root ball sits four inches above the finished grade within a pit excavated to three times the ball diameter. The root ball is set with burlap removed from the top one third and all synthetic materials cleared prior to backfilling with amended planting mix, which is watered and tamped to remove air pockets. A form saucer is shaped around the base and covered with mulch as specified over existing soil. Guying is provided by three one-eighth-inch galvanized wires set at a forty-five degree angle, secured with rubber tree ties containing seventeen gauge wire ties at the stakes and Duckbill anchor number sixty-eight drive anchors driven a minimum of fourteen inches into the ground.
