The planting pit features angled sides and a sloped bottom excavated into undisturbed soil with an optional auger hole for drainage. The root ball is set with its top two inches above finish grade while keeping the trunk flare visible above the mulch. Three tree stakes are driven into the ground outside the root ball and connected to the trunk using three flexible tree ties secured with roofing nails. Amended backfill is placed around the root ball after removing packaging material as per specifications, with the sides and bottom of the hole roughened. A mulch ring starts three inches from the stem and tapers to a three-inch depth.
