Forward and parallel approach clearances provide mandatory maneuvering space for wheelchairs in open configurations and restricted alcoves. A standard thirty by forty-eight inch clear floor space is maintained across all four configurations. Alcove approaches require specific minimum depths and widths, including a three-foot minimum width with a greater than two-foot depth for forward alcoves and a five-foot minimum width with a greater than one-foot-three-inch depth for parallel alcoves. Open approaches without alcove restrictions require minimum depths of four feet for forward approaches and two feet six inches for parallel approaches.
