Americans with Disabilities Act requirements for overhead obstructions beneath stair runs mandate a minimum vertical clearance of 80 inches (2030 millimeters) from the floor to the underside of the stair structure. Where the underside of the stair is lower than 80 inches, a guard rail must prevent access into the hazard area. The guard rail must be positioned to ensure that any area with less than 80 inches of clearance is inaccessible, with the top of the guard rail located at a maximum height of 27 inches above the floor.
