An overhead obstruction beneath a stairway requires a physical barrier to prevent access into hazard areas where vertical clearance falls below the minimum standard. The underside of the stair nosing creates a reduced vertical clearance of eighty inches minimum from the finished floor. Any protruding object beneath the stair must not extend higher than twenty-seven inches maximum above the floor if it encroaches into the circulation path. A guard rail is provided beneath the open stair run to restrict pedestrian access within the low-clearance zone.
