Code-compliant mounting heights and horizontal extensions apply to wall-mounted and post-mounted stair handrails. The top gripping surface of the handrail must be positioned between thirty-four and thirty-eight inches vertically above the stair nosing. Handrails require extensions of twelve inches minimum plus one tread depth at the top landing and twelve inches minimum at the bottom landing. Clear space between the wall and the handrail must be maintained at one and one-half inches minimum. Visually impaired warning striping with contrasting colors is required on stair treads.
