A hollow structural section column supports a wide-flange beam beneath an existing concrete-filled metal deck with topping slab. The connection features three-eighths-inch plates at each side of the hollow structural section, secured with three-quarter-inch diameter bolts using standard-size holes in the plates and vertical long-slotted holes in the hollow structural section. An angle brace measuring two and one-half by two and one-half by one-quarter inches connects with three-quarter-inch diameter bolts at each end. Fillet welds of one-quarter-inch size are typical at the connection joints.
