A hay bale sediment barrier is staked into the ground with two two-inch by two-inch by thirty-six-inch wooden stakes per bale. The bales are bound with wire or twine and set into a trench with a four-inch depth, with the stakes driven a minimum of eighteen inches into the subgrade. Sediment must be removed when accumulations reach one-third the above-ground height of the barrier. Hay bale barriers should not be used for more than three months, and any undermined or topped sections must be immediately replaced with a rock filter outlet.
