An existing wide flange beam connects to a hollow structural section column sized per plan via a three-eighths-inch steel plate welded to the underside of the wide flange beam flange. A one-half-inch by six-inch shear plate aligns its top edge flush with the top of the wide flange beam and fastens with five-sixteenths-inch fillet welds. A one-half-inch shear tab welded to the assembly connects back to the structural framework. The hollow structural section column sits above the assembly with typical one-half-inch clearances.
