A precast concrete box measuring 12 inches in diameter and 24 inches long is installed over an open bottom bedded in a minimum of 1 cubic foot of 3/4-inch gravel. A 3/4-inch by 10-foot copper-clad steel ground rod is driven vertically into the earth through the center of the well. A 4/0 bare copper conductor routes through the gravel bed and connects to the ground rod using a Burndy type SK water pipe clamp. Additional grounding bushings and an external connection to the substation ground bus tie into the conductor as required. The precast concrete box is finished with a cover featuring cast lettering reading GROUND.
