Sixteen-gauge wall studs spaced at sixteen inches on center receive a minimum 400S137-54 backing plate spanning between stud bays. The top and bottom flanges of the backing plate are notched at the wall stud with a maximum one-half inch clearance and a minimum one-inch dimension. Three number twelve sheet metal screws attach the backing plate typical at each connection. The assembly accommodates a maximum allowable stress design tension load of 150 pounds per stud bay.
