Trenching for underground electrical conduits requires a minimum twelve-inch width and three-foot depth. Conduits are bedded in sand or flowable fill, maintaining a minimum three-inch clearance around each conduit and a three-inch minimum separation from the trench walls and bottom. A six-inch wide red detectable marking tape is installed six inches above the conduit bank. The trench is backfilled with imported three-quarter-inch maximum diameter granular material, with the bottom of the trench smoothed and cleared of stones or hard matter prior to installation. The surface is restored with four inches of topsoil and new sod, extending six inches beyond the trench width on each side.
