Rock check dams are constructed within drainage channels using two to four inch rock, set to specific height and slope parameters. The maximum spacing between dams is determined such that the toe of the upstream dam sits at the same elevation as the top of the downstream dam. The channel profile incorporates two to one side slopes with rock completely covering the bottom and sides of the ditch. A sump is provided immediately upstream of the check dam for optimum effectiveness, and accumulated sediment must be removed when depths exceed six inches.
