A standard silt fence assembly utilizes two-by-two-inch wood posts spaced at a maximum of six feet on center. Filter fabric material in continuous rolls is attached to a six-inch wire mesh support fence using staples or wire rings. The wire mesh support fence is positioned on the downhill side of the filter fabric. The bottom of the fabric is lined in a six-inch by eight-inch trench, leaving a minimum of two inches exposed, and backfilled with native or washed gravel ranging from three-quarters of an inch to three inches.
