The concrete pavement joint features a final sawed joint face with a butted joint below and a field molded sealant placed above a backer rod material. The joint width ranges from one-half inch minimum to five-eighths inch maximum, with a minimum depth of one and one-quarter inches. Sealant depth is proportioned as zero point five times the width for silicone or one to one and one-half times the width for poured sealants, while the backer rod diameter is sized at width plus one-eighth inch. The sawcut depth of the joint reservoir must be coordinated with the sealant manufacturer's recommendations.
