The new asphalt concrete pavement section meets existing asphalt with a full-depth sawcut and protected edge, set over a minimum twelve-inch overlap onto undisturbed base. A bituminous tack coat seals the vertical joint between the new and existing asphalt surfaces. The underlying structural section consists of a four-inch minimum concrete or aggregate layer over Class II aggregate base compacted to ninety-five percent per ASTM D1557. Existing Class II aggregate base remains undisturbed to prevent loss of density and support under the existing pavement. Additional reinforcement includes number four bars at sixteen inches on center each way within the concrete section.
