A concrete pavement expansion joint features a field molded sealant over a bond breaker tape or backer rod and a non-extruding preformed compressible material. The joint reservoir has a minimum width W of 3/4 inch and a recess depth of 1/8 plus or minus 1/16 inch below the concrete pavement surface. Sealant depth D is maintained at 0.5W for silicone or 1.5W for hot-poured sealants per manufacturer recommendations. Backer rod material minimum diameter and bond breaker tape minimum width equal W plus 1/8 inch. Sawcut depth of the joint reservoir must be coordinated with the sealant manufacturer.
