A transition junction connects new hot mix asphalt surfacing to existing portland cement concrete. The assembly consists of a hot mix asphalt surface course and intermediate course placed over a base course and a compacted subgrade. A bituminous tack coat is applied between the pavement lifts. The connection detail features a stepped interface with a minimum 10.00 foot horizontal transition zone and a twenty-four inch stair step against the existing concrete. Portions of the existing base are removed to establish continuous compacted subgrade in accordance with specification section 31 00 00.00 06.
