A standard utility trench installation with compacted backfill, pipe bedding, and pavement restoration. The trench width requires an eighteen-inch clearance beyond the pipe outside diameter. The pipe is bedded on sand and gravel, requiring two inches minus for hard wall pipe or three-fourths inch minus for PVC pipe, set upon a shaped trench bottom or four-inch minimum sand and gravel in unstable or rock excavation areas. Side slopes must conform to local, state, and federal OSHA requirements. The pavement section consists of four inches minimum asphalt and eight inches minimum road base, or matches the existing asphalt thickness plus one inch if greater, with saw cut edges requiring clean and tack coat. A five-foot minimum cover is specified on water lines.
