A four-foot width of four-inch rigid insulation extends outward from the heated slab, transitioning to a two-foot width of two-inch rigid insulation beneath the unheated paving at the thermal break transition between a heated concrete sidewalk and unheated asphalt or Portland cement concrete pavement. The subgrade beneath the insulation requires compaction to ninety-five percent density and must remain smooth and free of rocks larger than one inch, utilizing leveling fill as necessary. Non-frost-susceptible fill is placed as specified in standard pavement and sidewalk details.
