An asphalt concrete pavement transition joint connects new hot mix asphalt type A to existing asphalt concrete pavement over an existing aggregate base section. A two-inch thick top course of new hot mix asphalt is placed over a base course, with a pavement fabric installed between the top and base course centered on the joint with a two-foot minimum width. The existing asphalt concrete pavement receives a one-inch minimum leveling course between the pavement fabric and existing pavement to provide a smooth surface for the fabric to adhere to. A two-foot minimum level grind is specified at the joint interface.
