Standard trench profile and bedding requirements for underground utility piping. The trench is excavated to a specified width with a minimum six-inch embedment material layer supporting the pipe below. Initial backfill with hand-tamped compaction extends ten inches minimum above the top of the pipe. A metallic tracer wire is installed directly above the initial backfill for non-metallic pipe applications, followed by a non-metallic caution tape placed twelve inches below the final grade. Final backfill and surface treatments are applied to meet specified project requirements up to the finish grade.
