An open-ended hollow structural section beam is sealed at the end with a flat cap plate welded continuously around the perimeter. The cap plate thickness matches the member wall thickness or is slightly thinner by one-sixteenth of an inch. All hollow structural section members with open ends require capping and seal welding after verifying the interior is free of moisture.
SEAL CAP PL TYP HSS BEAM NOTES: 1. CAP PLATE THICKNESS IS EQUAL TO OR 1/16" LESS THAN MEMBER WALL THICKNESS. 2. ALL HSS MEMBERS WITH OPEN ENDS SHALL BE CAPPED AND SEAL WELDED. 3. HSS MEMBERS SHALL BE FREE OF MOISTURE PRIOR TO CAPPING.
