Straw wattles require a 2-inch to 3-inch deep by 9-inch wide trench excavated along the contour of the slope. Place the wattle into the trench to follow the soil surface and compact excavated soil against the uphill side of the wattle. Adjacent wattle rolls must tightly abut one another. Secure the assembly using 18-inch to 24-inch long 1-inch by 1-inch wood stakes driven through the center of the wattle at 3-foot to 4-foot intervals, with additional stakes at each end. Drive stakes perpendicular to the slope face, leaving at least 2 inches to 3 inches of the stake exposed above the wattle. Determine wattle spacing by slope gradient, ranging from 5 feet for slopes steeper than 1:1 to 50 feet for slopes flatter than 6:1.
