A concrete sidewalk expansion joint has a maximum width of one-half inch. A preformed non-extruding joint filler occupies the lower portion of the joint space up to the specified walk depth. A cylindrical backer rod sits directly above the filler material to properly control the depth and profile of the sealant. Joint sealant is applied at the top surface, recessed a maximum of one-eighth inch below the concrete paving.
