The utility pipe trench requires a minimum sand bedding thickness of six inches underneath and beside the pipe, with twelve inches of sand minimum over the top of the pipe. A minimum ten American Wire Gauge tracer wire is installed directly on all non-metal piping within the initial backfill zone. Initial backfill is overlaid by final clean backfill up to the native backfill zone, which requires ninety percent compaction. Total depth from finished grade to the top of the pipe requires a thirty-inch minimum, increasing to a thirty-six-inch minimum under driveways where applicable.
