A reinforced concrete retaining wall bears on a continuous concrete footing with a sloped grade on one side and topsoil and surfacing per landscape on the other. A 4-inch slotted drain pipe rests on the footing adjacent to the wall stem, wrapped in non-woven construction geotextile for drainage. The drain pipe is enclosed within a 1-foot minimum to 2-foot maximum width zone of gravel backfill for drains. Additional gravel backfill for walls is placed above the drainage layer, extending up toward the topsoil surface.
