This trench detail shows utility pipe installation within an excavated roadway or site area. The pipe rests on a stable shaped foundation with four inches minimum sand or gravel required in unstable areas or through rock excavation. A sand and gravel bedding zone extends eighteen inches minimum above the pipe with sizing specified as two inches minus for hard wall pipe and three-quarters inch minus for PVC pipe. The trench width equals the pipe outer diameter plus eighteen inches, with side slopes conforming to local, state, and federal OSHA requirements. The trench is filled with compacted backfill up to the roadway subgrade. Pavement restoration consists of four inches minimum asphalt and eight inches minimum road base, or matching existing asphalt thickness plus one inch if greater. A saw cut is required to clean and tack coat edges.
