The pipe bedding material varies and is surrounded by well graded sand or gravel, with alternative materials including Class 2 aggregate base per Caltrans standard specification section 26-1.02A. General fill must be placed in lifts not exceeding eight inches in uncompacted thickness and compacted to at least ninety percent relative compaction by mechanical means only, while jetting of backfill and bedding materials is prohibited.
