Transverse crack inducers are placed longitudinally beneath the Portland cement concrete pavement and fastened to the ground using forty-penny common wire nails spaced approximately five feet on center. A continuous longitudinal crack inducer is installed at the joint with specific dimensional offsets ranging from six inches maximum to twelve inches from the joint and pavement edges. The paving lane width varies, and crack inducers are required at all type B, C, and D joints when the Portland cement concrete pavement thickness exceeds sixteen inches.
