Straw wattles are installed along slope contours to trap sediment and reduce erosion by decreasing slope gradient and increasing infiltration rates. The rolls measure approximately six inches in diameter and twenty to thirty feet long, bound with biodegradable netting. Installation requires placing the wattle in a trench three to five inches deep, secured with one-inch by one-inch wooden stakes spaced four feet apart. Adjacent rolls must tightly abut each other to prevent runoff from escaping underneath or around the barrier.
