A two-hour fire-rated gypsum wall assembly designated as Underwriters Laboratories assembly UL U423 comprises metal studs framed between an upper and lower structure, surfaced on both sides with two layers of 5/8-inch Type X gypsum board. Cavities are filled with sound attenuating batt insulation, achieving a Sound Transmission Class rating of 53. Joint firestopping is detailed at the head of the wall intersecting the upper structure, and kicker bracing is provided above the ceiling as required.
