A concrete pavement dummy contraction joint features an initial sawcut of depth S in a concrete slab of thickness T. The sawcut depth is determined by the pavement thickness per the accompanying table, specifying one-fourth of the slab thickness for slabs under twelve inches and a depth of three inches for slabs between twelve and eighteen inches. The joint creates a controlled plane of weakness to induce cracking along a straight line.
