A grab bar featuring a nominal diameter of one and one-quarter to one and one-half inches is installed with a one-and-one-half-inch clear space from the finished face of the wall assembly comprised of gypsum wallboard or ceramic tile. Backing is provided behind the wall surface for secure anchorage. A clear zone of one foot is maintained around the grab bar with no obstructions, supplemented by one-and-one-half-inch clear margins above and below.
