A sediment barrier consists of hay bales anchored to the ground with two two-inch by two-inch by thirty-six-inch wooden stakes driven a minimum of eighteen inches into the subgrade per bale. The hay bale is secured with binding wire or twine and keyed four inches into the existing soil with compacted earth or sediment banked against the upslope side. Notes specify that hay bale barriers should not be used for more than three months, accumulated sediment must be removed when reaching one-third of the above-ground barrier height, and undermined or topped sections must be replaced immediately with a rock filter outlet.
