Exit sign placement is determined by the vertical clearance above the door frame. When the dimension from the top of the door frame to the ceiling or obstruction is twelve inches or greater, the exit sign is located three inches above the door frame. When the dimension above the door head is less than twelve inches, the exit sign is aligned with the top of the frame and mounted on the strike side.
