A structural steel guard post connects to the side of a wide flange beam using a quarter-inch plate centered on the post and two half-inch diameter heavy hex A325 galvanized bolts. The beam web features typical quarter-inch plate web stiffeners welded with three-sixteenth-inch fillet welds. A metal grating bears on the top flange of the beam, maintaining a quarter-inch maximum gap against the guard post. A flat toeboard mounts directly to the face of the guard post above the grating level, leaving the bottom of the pipe end open.
