A W-shape or HSS steel column penetrates a deck plate backed by a minimum two-inch thick layer of foam insulation. A two-piece metal flashing is set in a continuous bed of sealant around the column base. Screws secure the flashing assembly as required, and perimeter sealant is applied all around the joint. A general note specifies that column bases at RAE 01 shall only be flashed and sealed where the deck plate and underlying structural beams do not fully seal the wall cavity below.
