A vertical expansion joint in an exterior plaster wall assembly consists of wall framing with 6-inch cold-formed metal studs spaced at 16 inches on center with R-19 batt insulation, faced with 5/8-inch gypsum sheathing. A weather barrier and flexible transition flashing run behind the exterior finish. Horizontal composite girts spaced at 16 inches on center support a 7/8-inch exterior plaster finish applied over metal lath fastened with No. 8 sheet metal screws to the girt at 6 inches on center vertically at each stud. A two-piece galvanized metal expansion joint bridges the 1-inch gap in the plaster finish.
